Short Description
Patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have changes in the function and structure of their brain, specifically in the regions that relate to social, emotional and cognitive processing (the amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus). We will use imaging techniques such as PET/MR scanning (combined positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance) and a radiotracer, F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG, an analog of glucose), to examine brain function and the connectivity of brain circuits that are responsible for social, emotional and cognitive processing in both individuals with PTSD and as well as healthy and trauma-exposed controls. The data obtained from this pilot study will guide us towards identifying the link between general brain function, molecular targets and the connectivity of brain circuits that contribute to individual differences in PTSD.
